Should I Brush My Cat’s Teeth?

The act of brushing a cat's teeth is risky. Is it worth the effort? Alternatives are available if you're not brave enough.

It's easy to think that brushing your cat's teeth isn't worth the risk to life and limb. It's something you might want to reconsider.

If we don't brush our own teeth, they'll eventually fall out, right? That can also happen to cats. Our furry friends are prone to periodontal disease in distressingly high numbers.

Between 50 and 90 percent of cats older than four years have some form of dental disease, according to Cornell University's Feline Health Center. Even if our feline friends do not lose their teeth, painful gums can pose a health risk to them.

Veterinary organizations and vets recommend brushing teeth daily, if possible. Even twice a day is suggested by some.
